How Often Should Guys Wash Their Hair?

How often should men wash their hair

A clean hair day feels awesome— no doubt. As we relish our soft, must-touch (but don’t touch!) hair, and its lightly woodsy scent, we get addicted to its freshness—ah…inhale it! It reminds us of the lone mountaineer who appreciates the crisp open breeze— a moment, like great hair, you just can’t force.  Because if you do, and start shampooing too often, you’ll actually create the opposite effect: worse hair! Want to know the best approach? Let’s explore how often you should really wash your hair.

How often should I wash my hair?

There’s no one-size-fits-all rule for washing frequency. But on average, a guy should wash his hair two to three times per week.

This routine is standard for maintaining clean hair with a healthy moisture balance. Since shampoo’s mission is geared for complete gunk removal, it can overwork its power and deplete your hair’s natural oils as it bulldozes away dirt and mystery fluff. All this sanitizing leaves your hair drier and more brittle.

You’ll get this moisture back through the day as your scalp produces oil, but without enough breaks between washes, your hair texture gets dry and frail.

What if I want to wash more?

The only time you should wash your hair more often, say four times per week, is if you workout or sweat often. Assuming your hair gets really greasy,  you can add another hair wash day to the week.

Effects of overly dry hair

Poor hair quality

Dry hair is kryptonite for your look.  After weeks of excessive shampooing, your hair will start to suffer (and hate you) as it becomes more limp and lifeless, dying a little inside each day-- literally and figuratively.

Breakage

Without moisture, the hair strands are more breakable—like the way a frozen-stiff snowboard can crack. It’s an unsmooth ride, same with your hair, same with your overall style.

Dullness

Then there’s the issue of lost hair shine. Too much shampooing sucks away all those glistening oils, leading to unsexy dull hair-- plus frizz.

Dandruff

Finally, you may get stuck with scalp dryness. Before you know it, you’re itching your head, causing an unsavoury downpour of dead skin flurries--your personal brand of grossness, otherwise known as dandruff.

As you see, there’s no single solution for how often you should really wash your hair. To craft the ideal routine, you should cater to your hair’s individual needs and grease levels.

Stay groomed and glorious, guys!
